Hard work, talent and a little luck combined this past Saturday in Weiser when the Kubs squeezed out a 42-41 victory against Butte County, moving them onto round one of the state tournament against Ambrose at Vallivue High School in Caldwell tonight.
The game was in its final seconds when a shot by Butte’s Sage Lummins hit the rim, bouncing clear of the net, giving the Kubs its first trip to state in seven years.
Kudos go out to Kavan Mercer, who kept the pressure on as he covered Butte’s top scorer, Sage Lummins, who was limited to just 13 points.
According to Coach Aaron Skinner, the team benefitted from luck but also talent. This typifies what the Kubs have been about all season. Often starting with a few missteps, then seizing opportunity, getting their act together and winning the games that counted.
