Kamiah’s Kaden DeGroot has dunked a few times this season, and he counted one he threw down against Troy last Saturday, Feb. 10, as one of the best. “It’s between that one and the Rampage one,” he said. “It definitely gets the crowd going.”
As a team, the Kamiah boys doubled up Troy’s scoring total, and enter the district tournament with the No. 2 seed ‑ second only to Lapwai. “We secured our spot,” he said. “We are on the opposite side of Lapwai in the bracket, so that’s kind of where we want to be.”
Against Troy, the Kubs “kept up our intensity, and they eventually just broke down,” DeGroot said.
He pointed to the play of David Kludt and Everett Skinner. “Dave and Everett always do good on their shooting and rebounding and playmaking,” he said, “and then Rehan [Kou] is that big force in the middle. He’s just always there for a big rebound or a big layup. ... Rehan has been a huge part of our team this year. It just seems like he always makes it happen.”
Kamiah hosted CV on Wednesday, Feb. 15, and the Kubs play on Monday, Feb. 20. The time and opponent depends on Wednesday’s games, which were played after the print deadline: 2:30 p.m., or, with a Wednesday win, at 5:30 p.m., at Lewiston High School.
“We can’t get overconfident,” DeGroot said. “Anything can happen in a district game, and we have got to win to make it to state.”
