Memorial Day services planned

VFW Post Commander Pat Long announced the schedule for the 2013 Memorial Day events.

On Saturday, May 25, members of VFW Post 5407 and American Legion Post 75 will be placing flags on the graves of fellow veterans throughout the local area. It is the desire of the members to ensure all deceased veterans are honored for their service to their country. Because some graves are not clearly marked, we are asking members of the public to help locate those graves. This can be done by contacting Jaxon Caren at 926-4161 or Gary Orr at 935-7925.

In addition to placing flags on the graves, the two organizations will conduct six services on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, honoring deceased veterans. The services will begin at 9 a.m. at the Kamiah Cemetery. From there, the veterans will proceed to the Kamiah Highway 12 bridge at 9:30 a.m., then to the Highway 13 bridge in Kooskia at 10 a.m., Pine Grove Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., the First Indian Presbyterian Cemetery on Highway 12 at 11 a.m. The final service will be held at the No-Kid Cemetery in Kamiah at 11:30 a.m.

Following the services, the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary will be holding a barbecue at the VFW Post building, 3376 Tamarack beginning at 1 p.m. The public is invited to join the veterans in this activity. A $5 donation is requested to cover the cost of the food items.

Commander Long expressed his sincere appreciation to community members for their continuing support of the activities of area veterans and encourages everyone to remember veterans on Memorial Day.
