Kamiah girls sweep vault, win team title

The KHS girls edged out Grangeville last Friday while hosting a 16-team track meet under ideal running conditions.

Shelby Cash continued to dominate the 400, not only in Friday’s meet but also as the top 400 athlete in the region. The Kub girls also won the 800 medley and swept all three places in the pole vault.

In the vault, Blake Jacobs finished first after clearing 8-06 while teammates Cash and Tiffany Lytle finished second and third after both cleared 7-06. The Kubs’ Kaylynn Lloyd finished second in the discus with a throw of 114-091/2.

Lady Kubs face Maniacs Saturday in District II opener 

Prep softball playoffs begin Saturday when the Kamiah Kubs take on the Orofino Maniacs at 10 a.m. at Potlatch to determine the 2A District II champion.

The Kubs will have their hands full after the Maniacs (14-6, 7-2) swept at double-header at Kamiah on Monday, 15-8 and 20-1 to conclude the regular season.

The win secured a No. 2 seed for Orofino in the district tournament.

NHS senior named ‘Wrangler All-Star’ for third year 

For the third straight year, Chase Haight (right), a senior at Nezperce High School, has been selected to the “Wrangler All Star” team. Now competing in his fourth year in the Idaho High School Rodeo Assoc. (IHSRA), his events this year included team roping with partner and brother Clayne Haight plus tie-down roping, steer wrestling, cutting and saddle bronc. 

The Haight family will soon be headed to Pocatello for the IHSRA state finals in June. The end of summer will bring a new adventure for Chase when he attends the Univ. of Montana Western in Dillon where he will be part of the rodeo team there.

KHS band, choir to perform at Riverfront Park May 12

Kamiah High School’s band and choir will be performing on Monday, May 12 at the Riverfront Park beginning at 6:30 p.m., a show that promises to be entertaining.

Musical selections range from jazz to marches and from a Cartoon Symphony to the classics we all know and love.

Some new pep band selections will also be introduced. The Kamiah Kiwanis will be sponsoring an ice cream social during the performances so bring your lawn chair and prepare to have a great time.

Snowpack limits spring access to Clearwater Nat’l Forest 

Individuals anxious to enjoy spring in north-central Idaho’s national forests are finding the access limited. The major obstacle is the hefty snow pack.

As of May 1, the Natural Resources Conservation Service website reported the Clearwater Basin has a snow pack with water content that is 140% of average. Frequent storms continue to drop snow in the mountains while cooler than normal temperatures slow the melt-off process.
