Riverfront concert to benefit children

Area churches and organizations are banding together to put on a concert next week to benefit needy children overseas.

The Kids Matters Benefit Concert featuring musician Brenton Brown, will be held at Kamiah’s Riverfront Park July 11 from 6-9 p.m.

Event organizers and Nazarene Church Pastor Hunter Mizar said the money raised will be given to Compassion International to assist overseas children in need of basic services that are all too often taken for granted in this country.

Thirteen-year-old ball player not deterred by diabetes

Austin Breckenridge is living proof that when life throws you a curve, you take your best swing.

Like most 13-year-old boys, Austin loves sports. But the lanky blue-eyed teen is known in baseball circles as a prodigy.

Unlike almost everyone else his age, Austin’s biggest battle isn’t hitting, catching, fielding line drives or finding the strike zone with a full count in the bottom inning of a championship game.

It’s diabetes.

For the Breckenridge family, Jan. 27, 2007 is known as D-Day. D for Diabetes. That’s the day doctors determined that Austin had Type 1 diabetes.
